The Shrawley Witch
|
| A notable witch case from Shrawley, on the west bank of the Severn, when Margaret Hill was the subject of many accusations. A child who refused her some oatmeal subsequently fell sick, and when she had been unable to obtain tobacco 'on trust', the shopkeeper's pigs tumbled about and died. A woman who had affronted her dropped lame. After she had been refused buttermilk a cow fell sick, and a neighbour whose calf died remembered having a dispute with Margaret Hill over the price of a peck of corn. For the villagers, what could be clearer ? It is not known what became of Margaret, but it was evident that 'hanging was too good for her. |
